What it is
What gutters actually involves
You have almost certainly seen tiger striping without knowing it had a name: the vertical black streaks running down the face of white or bronze gutters, spaced a few inches apart, that look like the gutter is dirty but never wash off. They are not dirt. They are a bonded oxidation stain, formed where rainwater carries roof grit and airborne pollutants over the drip edge and evaporates on the aluminum face.
Because the staining is chemically bonded rather than sitting on top, a house wash will not touch it. Neither will pressure. That is why a freshly washed home so often still looks slightly off — the walls are clean, and the gutters are still striped. It takes a dedicated brightening agent applied by hand, allowed to dwell, and agitated with a brush.
To be clear about scope: this is exterior gutter cosmetics. It is a different service from gutter clean-out, which is removing leaves and debris from inside the trough. We are happy to do both, and most customers who book one end up wanting the other.

North Texas
Why it happens here
Two North Texas realities make tiger striping worse here than in most markets. The first is our tree canopy: post oaks, cedar elms, and pecans drop tannin-heavy debris that breaks down on the roof and washes over the gutter face with every rain, and tannin stains aluminum readily.
The second is the way we get rain. DFW does not drizzle — it dumps two inches in forty minutes and then goes hot and dry for three weeks. That cycle is perfect for striping: heavy flow carries maximum contaminant over the edge, then intense sun bakes it onto the finish before anything can rinse it away.
Homes on the newer construction corridors around Roanoke, Argyle, and north Fort Worth get an extra dose of it, since ambient construction dust adds to what is already coming off the roof.

How the job runs
No surprises, no upsell in the driveway. This is the same sequence every time.

Assess the gutter finish
We check the material and the condition of the factory finish. Aluminum with intact paint brightens beautifully. Gutters where the finish has already chalked out will improve but will not return to a factory look, and we will say so before you pay for it.

Rinse the exterior face
A clean-water rinse first, so the brightening agent works on the bonded stain rather than being spent on loose surface dirt.

Apply the brightener and let it dwell
The gutter-specific solution goes on by hand across the full face and dwells long enough to break the bond between the oxidation and the aluminum. Timing matters — too short and it will not release, too long on a hot day and it can dry on the surface.

Hand agitate every foot
This is the part that cannot be automated. Every linear foot gets brushed by hand from a ladder. It is why gutter brightening is priced by the foot and why nobody does it fast.

Rinse and inspect from the ground
A thorough rinse, then we walk the perimeter and look up from where you look up — the street, the driveway, the front walk. Anything still showing gets another pass.

Gutters questions
Why did my gutters stay streaky after a house wash?
Because tiger striping is a bonded oxidation stain, not surface dirt, and house wash solution is not formulated to break it. This is normal and it is not a sign your house wash was done badly. Gutter brightening is a separate chemical process with separate labor, which is why it is quoted as its own line item.
Is this the same as gutter cleaning?
No. Brightening is cosmetic work on the outside face. Gutter clean-out is removing leaves and roof grit from inside the trough so water can actually drain. They solve completely different problems. We offer both and most people booking one want the other, especially in fall.
Will it work on bronze or dark gutters?
Yes. Dark gutters hide the striping better, so people notice it later, but the same oxidation is happening and the same treatment removes it. Dark finishes also show hard water spotting more, which comes off in the same process.
How long does the result last?
Typically two to three years before striping is noticeable again, though homes under heavy tree cover will trend shorter. Keeping limbs trimmed back off the roof line helps more than anything we can sell you, since most of what stains the gutter face is debris coming off the roof in the first place.
Can you do it without a house wash?
We can, but we usually recommend against it. Bright white gutters against dirty siding draw the eye straight to the siding. Most customers book them together, and it is more efficient for us to do both in one visit, which we reflect in the pricing.
